Gojukai
Gojukai describes the associations created by Kaiso Gogen Yamaguchi. Yamaguchi Shihan developed a curriculum that has been in place for over fifty years. It has continued to undergo refinement and further development by Saiko Shihan Goshi Yamaguchi, and continues to be a unique and interesting style.
Training in the Gojukai can be characterized by four main areas - Kihon (Basic training) Kata (forms of patterns), Kumite (Sparring) and Bunkai (Analysis). All four elements are essential for positive development of the Karateka in our association. Many people try to focus on only one preferred area, but this usually results in personal achievement being slowed or limited.
While these are the main four traditional areas of training, a fifth shouldn't be overlooked. Competition is a healthy way to develop strong karateka. By setting goals (like achieving positive results in competition) individuals can see steady progress. People have to be careful though that the focus of training is not exclusively for competition. For elite athletes this will allow them to succeed, but it may not allow them to continue training as a life-long endeavor due to injuries, stress or even boredom with the rigors of their competition/exercise routine.
